One thing students consistently tell us is that LawPALS is a great support to them coming into the LLB. LawPALS is our Peer-Assisted Learning Scheme where new LLB students are automatically put into groups led by two Student Leaders. Your Leaders are LLB students in years above you, and they meet with your group once a week at lunchtimes to help you navigate your way successfully into and through the first semester of law school. You will meet your Student Leaders and the rest of your group at the Welcome Event on Thursday 17 September 2020 at 11am (details are in your UoE Events App).
LawPALS sessions match your timetable in two ways – not only are they scheduled at lunchtime when no other classes take place, but they run alongside your courses so that, for example, before you have to submit an essay you will have had a session on writing law essays. Topics covered include: essays; exams and assessments; careers; work/life balance and many more! We have separate groups for four-year LLBs, 2-year (Graduate) LLBs and Visiting/Exchange students. Obviously, things are a little different this semester so your sessions will be held online using Microsoft Teams. Your Student Leaders will invite you to your first session, so please look out for your calendar invitation towards the end of Welcome Week.
Last year’s first years said the following about LawPALS:
“I feel it is an essential way to learn law. A lot of first years come into law with the idea of law being overwhelming. It is not, and LawPALS helps direct that and lift the weight off one’s shoulders.”
“It’s a great opportunity to get advice from people who have been through what you’re going through.”
“It was very helpful to not feel so alone in your studies.”
“Very useful to get to know more about the course and preparation for the exams.”
“I thought it was extremely useful and the students were super nice and welcoming and it’s nice to talk to a student who has been through it rather than a lecturer or tutor.”
