Welcome New LLB Students!

Congratulations on starting your new student journey here at Edinburgh Law School. Welcome!

Whether you are a 4-year LLB Honours student, 2-year Graduate LLB or a Visiting/Exchange student you get support from LawPALS.

Students always tell us that LawPALS is a great support to them coming into Edinburgh Law School. LawPALS is our Peer-Assisted Learning Scheme.

How does it work?

New LLB students are automatically put into groups led by two Student Leaders. Your Leaders are LLB students in years above you. They meet with your group once a week at lunchtimes to help you navigate your way successfully into and through the first semester of law school. You will meet your Student Leaders and the rest of your group in the Old College Quad for your Welcome Event on Thursday 16th September at 11am.

LawPALS sessions match your timetable in two ways:

  1. They are scheduled at lunchtime when no other classes take place.
  2. They run alongside your courses so that, for example, before you have to hand in an essay you will have had a session on writing law essays.

Topics covered include: essays; exams and assessments; careers; work/life balance and many more! We have separate groups for four-year LLBs, 2-year (Graduate) LLBs and Visiting/Exchange students. This year your sessions will be held online using Microsoft Teams. Your Student Leaders will invite you to your first session, so look out for your calendar invitation towards the end of Welcome Week. Sessions start in week one!

What have other students said about LawPALS?

“The program is an excellent way to feel less nervous about all the new challenges of law school. It helps you ask the questions weighing on your mind and gives you some friendly faces every week, which can offer a lot of comfort. It also offers a way to meet new students and have a fun time overall.”

“It was great to have a support network in place for us upon arrival at university and there was always someone there to answer our questions and give us more information on several aspects of uni life.”

“The whole LawPALS experience really helped me adjust to university life especially when everything was done virtually. It allowed me to interact with other students.” “Very useful to get to know more about the course and preparation for the exams.”

“100% it’s one of the highlights of my degree so far.”

We can’t wait to meet you this semester!
