Wanted: LawPALS Coordinator

Dear first or second year PhDs,

LawPALS, Edinburgh Law School’s Peer Assisted Learning Scheme, is recruiting!  We are looking to appoint a student from the 2015/16 postgraduate student body to fulfil the role of Coordinator and lead the project under the supervision of the Director of Student Experience.  The postholder would be expected to undertake some duties from May 2016 and during the summer in the run-up to the new academic year.  LawPALS operates in semester one only but the duties of Coordinator are spread through the academic year. This is not a teaching post but it is an opportunity to develop leadership and student support skills, while gaining paid experience of developing and running an innovative scheme within the university.

Please note that the 180 hours limit noted in the job description (outlined below) includes all other paid roles at the university, such as teaching, research assistance and the like.

Responsibilities include:

  • Organising and running training for Student Leaders in the week prior to Welcome Week in September (with input and support from Director of Student Experience and other colleagues).
  • Oversee promotion of the programme through the Student Leaders. Promotion includes promoting to incoming students before, during and after their arrival.
  • Finalise programme of sessions for the year. This is concentrated in semester one for the majority of students.
  • Coordinate booking of rooms for sessions.
  • Support student leaders, including overseeing their progress and providing supplies as necessary.
  • Oversee Student Leaders reporting of sessions in terms of attendance and monitoring.
  • Be on campus during session times (1-2, Monday to Thursday, semester one) and be contactable by students during this time in case any issues arise.
  • Liaise regularly with the Director of Student Experience.
  • Organise and facilitate leaders’ meetings on a fortnightly basis.
  • Oversee day-to-day enquiries about the programme.
  • Maintain LawPALS webpage and coordinate Student Leaders running of the Facebook page for incoming students.
  • Act as an initial point of contact for participants, academic staff and student leaders as necessary throughout the duration of appointment.
  • Coordinate recruitment of student leaders during January/February.
  • Report to Director of Student Experience.
  • Write annual report for presentation at school meeting.

Time commitment:

  • Total at least 140 and at most 180 hours per year, spread over a year.
  • February/March: recruitment and selection of new leaders.
  • April: evaluation of programme.
  • Late spring/summer: planning training and next academic year’s programme.
  • September: Running training. Promotional events. Sessions start.
  • September – November: Sessions run – Coordinator supports and meets fortnightly with Leaders.
  • January – March: coordination of sessions for semester two only Exchange students.


  • LLB (or equivalent from another jurisdiction) graduate enrolled on a postgraduate research (PhD) degree in the School of Law in 2016/17.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to easily interact with students and staff.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Exemplary organisational and time management skills.
  • Competent computing skills.
  • Confident public speaker.


  • Experience in managing and/or training.
  • Experience as a student mentor or peer assisted learning leader;
  • Tutoring experience.
